Beautiful yarn

Many of my fellow knitters have a stash of yarn at home. So do I. My stash is organized in bins by weight and documented in Ravelry to help my memory. I went on a bit of a yarn binge in July, giving myself permission to buy many of the beautiful brands I had resisted for so long. As the yarn flowed into the house it did not escape the notice of my husband. He did make a comment about the size of my stash when I related a story about a friend’s stash. I thought about it and eventually had to agree that he was right.

My stash was outgrowing its bins, but I didn’t love it all any more. I loved most of it when I bought it, except for the sale yarn that I bought because of the savings. I decided that it’s not helpful to hold onto yarn that is no longer something I expect or hope to use. I put together a bag of free yarn and a small bin of reasonably-priced yarn and handed off 90% of it at my next sit and knit day at my LYS. Perhaps watching all those organizing shows on TV finally paid off.

Then I rearranged my stash. The lace-weight yarn that I seem to be spending most of my time with now has a bigger bin. The cotton and kiddie yarn bins were combined. And I feel a bit better about the whole thing, although I still need to knit up a lot of stash to reduce the guilt!

What? You want some yarn porn? I will show you some of my lovelies, although I can’t tell you what they’re like to knit with yet. Soon. You’ll be able to see that I’m back to buying greens.

The yarn that captivates me the most is from Grey Drizzle Fibers. The gorgeous green in a Ravelry ad sent me to Deb’s Etsy shop. I got a skein of Acorn Merino Drip and some glowing Honey Merino Mist. Service was quick and the yarn was, if possible, even more glowing/lambent in person. And there’s a fan group on Ravelry if you’re interested.  This is the kind of yarn that I need to find just the right pattern for.

Also on my list of lovelies is some wool from Renaissance Dyeing in France. Andie was lovely to deal with. I love that they work with natural dyestuffs. You have to have a look at the web site. I snagged an extra large skein of Wasabi, an unintentional colour. Andie is now doing 100g (1200m) put ups of lace-weight too. Oh, and of course there’s a Ravelry group too.

It’s not yarn, but Signature Needles went and had a sale for Canadians – free shipping! This was one more thing on my list of coveted items and with money in the PayPal account, I jumped in. My go-to lace needles have been my 3.25mm and 3.75mm Addi Lace needles. I sprang for two larger circular needles (4mm, 4.5mm). What I love most about them is that the cables swivel. No more tangled kinky cables!

I will show you more of my purchases another day!

Pancreatic Craftacular

In the month of August, I’m participating in Kim Werker’s Pancreatic Craftacular by donating 50% of each pattern sold to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. There are lots of other fantastic folks participating – do have a look! And if you’re not interested in buying but you want to help out, Kim’s got a goal to reach by Sept. 12th and she’s already at 80%. Donate here.

Included in my donations are half of any sales of the newly-named Diamond Sunburst Shawl. Thanks to all for helping out with suggestions.  jenniem on Ravelry won a copy of the pattern. And thanks to the Thursday Sit & Knit crew at Yarn Forward for helping me sort through the suggestions and pick some favourites. I ended up not going with the mysteriously added “Jaimee’s Shawl” which somehow got a large number of votes. I’m looking at you, knittyjaimee.

And just to leave you all with a story that probably shouldn’t irritate me as much as it does, I’ve got to tell you about having my new thermostat installed this morning. The guy was quick about his work and wanted to show me how the new one works (oooh, nice touch screen). He asked if we were on a schedule on our previous one. Yes. He asked what the temperature was set to. I didn’t know because my husband set it, so I said so. He demonstrated the setup briefly, and then told me he was leaving the manuals with me for my husband.

It’s a freaking touch screen with a readable interface. Once you’ve seen someone demonstrate it, you know how to use it. It’s that easy. You don’t even need an engineering degree (which I have).

Leaving the manuals with me for my husband. Hmph.

Shawl naming contest

As I mentioned on Ravelry, I’ve got a new shawl pattern that I’m getting ready for release. The only problem is it’s currently going by the very boring title of “Lace Diamond Capelet“. I need your help coming up with something better. Feel free to comment here or on Ravelry & let me know if you’ve got a better suggestion. The first person to suggest the winning title gets a copy of the pattern as soon as it’s released. I’m aiming for mid-August.

It’s a delightful beaded lace shawl knit with one skein of Woolen Rabbit Muireann (mmm, silk and linen) that drapes beautifully. It doesn’t threaten to slide off because of the shape: 8 sections increasing from a collar. The shape also means it hangs fairly long in front but is shorter and more straight across in the back than a triangular shawl. This pattern has been completely test knit in both written & charted versions.

My project is here, and here are some pictures with the lovely Francine (and in one case the statue of Laura Secord at the Valiants Memorial) as models:

I may be back later next week asking for help choosing among the best suggestions if there isn’t a clear winner in my head.

Eiffel Tower Shawl KAL podium

Somehow I thought I’d get a chance to blog more during July, but between watching the Tour de France at night, keeping up with the Ravelry KAL and associated inquiries, and trying to sell the house, it just didn’t happen.

I was rooting for Saxo Bank this year, so I’m happy for Andy Schleck’s awesome result, even if I’d rather have seen him in yellow at the end.

But we’re not necessarily here to talk about the Tour de France podium results, right? We’re here to talk about the podium results from the Eiffel Tower Shawl Knitalong which ran on Ravelry along with the Tour de France.

I am happy to announce the winners:
The Yellow Jersey, Maillot Jaune, taking the Sundara Silk Lace in Amber Seas, is javalulu’s entry:

The Green Jersey, for speedy finishers, taking the green Malabrigo Lace, goes to Inge (im201959):

The White Jersey, for knitters new to lace or charts, taking the light green Handmaiden Sea Silk, goes to Roxanne (embroiderybee):

The Polka Dot Jersey, for knitters who had mountains to climb during the process, taking the red Handmaiden Silk Lace, goes to Sara (Pattycake), whose tale of woe gathered the most love in the Ravelry thread.

The Lanterne Rouge prize, for knitters who attempted but were unable to finish the shawl during the TdF, goes to Cheryl (seajaes).

And the Red Devil (spectators) prize, for all those who cheered on by joining my mailing list, blogging about the contest, or tweeting about it, goes to Dianne Moore, who signed up to the mailing list. Dianne, you’ve got two weeks to respond to the email before I move on and select another random number for the winner!

Finally, a sign you’ve spent too much time listening to Paul Sherwen & Phil Liggett is that random cyclists’ names pop into your head unbidden. Over the last couple of days I’ve caught myself thinking “Kanstantin Sivtsov”, “Robbie Hunter”, and “Sylvain Chavanel” for no apparent reason at all.

Tour de France progress

My busy week’s made keeping up with the Tour de France difficult, but thanks to my PVR and fast-forwarding through some of the less interesting bits, I’m caught up. It’s been exciting so far but has taken such a brutal physical toll on so many riders already. I was a little torn yesterday between feeling sorry for Frank Schleck and feeling happy for Fabian Cancellara & Thor Hushovd. It’s been an enjoyable Tour so far as a spectator, but I’m looking forward to the mountain stages.

I’ve also been busy with the Eiffel Tower Knitalong (KAL) and contest (see previous post) that I’ve been running in a Ravelry group. There have been many good questions as people selected their yarn, needles and tried to figure out how big their shawls were going to be. If you haven’t started yet, it’s not too late! I’m particularly excited by the folks who’ve talked about making the shawl their own in different ways – changing up parts of the design and adding in embellishments like beads and crystals. Here’s the first visible evidence of a special project like that. Cindy’s adding in crystals to her shawl and accurately described what she’s got so far as looking like twinkling stars in the sky.

Cindy's sparkly Eiffel Tower Shawl

Finally yesterday I started knitting the shawl again myself in a silver silk from Colourmart. It didn’t seem right to start a KAL and not knit myself! I’m sure I’m way behind, but I have the advantage of knowing the road ahead very well already.

And now for some rest. There’s still a lot of Tour de France left to watch and though I’m not riding it, I’ve got to pace myself!

Eiffel Tower Shawl / Tour de France KAL contest starts July 3

Great news! The Eiffel Tower Shawl pattern is now up for sale on Ravelry.
Eiffel Tower Shawl

$6 USD

Better news? The Tour de France starts this Saturday, July 3rd and with it the knitalong (KAL) contest for the Eiffel Tower Shawl.

I’ve finalized the categories, rules and prizes that I talked about earlier. There is a Eiffel Tower KAL group on Ravelry, and that’s the place to keep up on what’s going on and to post your finished projects for the prizes.

Not already a member of Ravelry? Well get on over there & sign up! It’s a great resource for yarn, patterns, troubleshooting along with all manner of non-knitting related stuff.

The categories are similar to those in the Tour de France. One person will win for each category, and will choose any ONE of the yarns in their category. See pictures at the bottom. The categories are:

Maillot Jaune – Yellow Jersey
Winner of the overall Tour de France. You have to complete the Eiffel Tower Shawl within the Tour de France (July 3 – 25) to be eligible.

Maillot Vert – Green Jersey – for the sprinters
For the speedy knitters, I’ll do a random draw from among the first 5 lace weight and first 5 fingering weight finishers to post in the Ravelry group.

Maillot Blanc – White Jersey – best “young” knitters
For those new-to-lace, or new-to-knitting. You can choose to identify yourself as a contestant for the white jersey, and if you complete the shawl during the Tour, you’ll be eligible for the draw for this prize.

Maillot à Pois Rouges – Polka Dot Jersey – mountains
For those who’ve overcome the most struggles on the way. Needle broke? Pet had an encounter with your WIP? This is for you, and readers will vote on this prize in its own thread in Ravelry.

Lanterne Rouge – “last” place
Not everyone who starts the Tour de France finishes, so anyone who starts the Tour but doesn’t finish within the deadline will be eligible for the Lanterne Rouge prize. Post your unfinished shawl to the Lantern Rouge thread in the Ravelry group before July 27th and you’ll be in for this draw.

The Red Devil – spectators
Not everyone has the time and space to compete in the Tour, but there will be a prize category for those who wish to follow along and cheer on the competitors. The inspiration is Didi Senft, a notorious spectator, bike-builder, and cycling fanatic. Prize: Any of the yarns available from the other categories after the winner takes their choice!

There are 3 ways to get an entry into the spectator prize draw:

1) subscribing to my mailing list (and if you’re already on it, great, you’re in!)
2) tweeting about the contest once between July 3 – 25 with the hashtag #EiffelKAL and a link to the pattern: http://bit.ly/EiffelShawl
3) blogging about the contest, the design, your participation in it, or similar, and sending me a Ravelry PM or email (nservant at gmail dot com) about it before end of day July 25th

Anyone can have up to 3 entries in the spectator prize draw!

And here are the prizes, grouped by category. Remember, the winner of each category gets to select one of the prizes in that group.

July contest preview

I’m anticipating 2 things in July: the release of my Eiffel Tower Shawl (see below) on or before July 1st and the start of the Tour de France (July 3rd). I thought I’d combine the two for a fun and crazy month of knitting and prizes. I’ll be running a knitalong (KAL) contest for the Eiffel Tower Shawl pattern to coincide with the riding of the Tour de France. To be notified when the shawl pattern goes live and the contest begins, please join my mailing list.

Eiffel Tower Shawl

Tour de France/Eiffel Tower Shawl KAL CONTEST!

There will be categories similar to those in the Tour de France. One person will win for each category, and will choose any ONE of the yarns in their category. The categories right now are:

Maillot Jaune – Yellow Jersey

Winner of the overall Tour de France. You have to complete the Eiffel Tower Shawl within the Tour de France (July 3 – 25) to be eligible. This will go to, um, well, my favourite? A group favourite? If you’ve got any suggestions on the best way to pick an overall winner among those who complete the Tour de France Eiffel Tower KAL, drop them my way. Since I’ve just finished my large lace version of the shawl with one skein of Sundara Silk Lace in Amber Seas (see picture above), the other one is up for grabs for the overall winner!

Maillot Vert – Green Jersey – for the sprinters
For the speedy knitters, I’ll do a random draw from among the first 5 finishers – a photo finish, as it were.

Maillot Blanc – White Jersey – best “young” knitters
For those new-to-lace, or new-to-knitting. You can choose to identify yourself as a contestant for the white jersey, and if you complete the shawl during the Tour, you’ll be eligible for the draw for this prize.

Lanterne Rouge – “last” place
Not everyone who starts the Tour de France finishes, so anyone who starts the Tour but doesn’t finish within the deadline will be eligible for the Lanterne Rouge prize.

The Red Devil – spectators
Not everyone has the time and space to compete in the Tour, but there will be a prize category for those who wish to follow along and cheer on the competitors. The inspiration that sprang to mind was Didi Senft, a notorious spectator, bike-builder, and cycling fanatic.

PRIZES!!

What could you win? Well here’s what I’ve come up with so far after looking into the stash.

The Red Devil – Spectators
Any of the yarns available from the other categories after the winner takes their choice!

So now what?

Please email me (nservant at gmail dot com) if you’ve got any suggestions for the contest or category expansions that I haven’t thought of. For instance I couldn’t figure out what the polka dot jersey (best climber) would mean in terms of knitting a shawl!

More details will come soon and if you want to find out when the pattern is available and the contest begins, please join my mailing list! No spam, I promise. Only very infrequent updates on pattern news from me. And the good news about joining the list? That’s one of the ways to become eligible for the spectator prize!

I won!

Yes, it’s been a while since I posted much here, but I’ve been busy. We decided to put our house on the market, so it’s been a whirlwind of cleaning, tidying, painting, throwing things out, gardening, etc. but it all looks great now. We’ve been on the market for a few weeks and we’ll see how it goes.

So there hasn’t been as much knitting time as I might like. As you could see in my previous post, I’m designing again. But it’s nice to take a break and work on something that doesn’t involve inventing everything from scratch.

I’ve been entering the contests on Ve’s blog, Yarn On The House, as often as I can get there in time. There have been wonderful giveaways. I’m thrilled to show you that I actually won! Here are the prizes: some Berroco Comfort and a lovely book of Tot Toppers Hats by Kate Oakes. Cute, and the little guy pointing on the front makes me want to cast on for one immediately.

Return of the knitting mojo

Now that I’ve got the knitting mojo back in action, I’m actively working on my next pattern. It’s based on another Art Deco building – in fact another building that was the tallest structure for a while: the Eiffel Tower. What’s not to love? It’s the detail between the bottom legs of the tower that inspired me:

And here’s my interpretation:

I’m in the middle of working from a written & slightly adapted version of this, and I’ll be looking for test knitters shortly.

We apologize for the inconvenience

I’m finally changing over to WordPress because of Blogger’s reluctance to let me ftp files over to my server. I will get this sorted out shortly & looking a little better, but it’s bare bones for now.

In knitting news, I recently finished a version of Citron out of yummy Malabrigo Lace in a lovely blue colour. I’d been trying out patterns here & there for a while with the lace, but the changes in colour were too much. Citron, with its stockinette, fit this wool much better.

My Citron

Ciel on the floor

Everything worked out exactly as in the pattern, including the size (about 14 inches deep, about 34 inches on the long edge). This means, unfortunately, that this lovely blue thing is not for me but for my daughter. Oh well! I had only a few yards of wool left and I feel like the wool ended up becoming the right thing. Overall, I’m fairly happy. I could see doing a version of this in some Madelinetosh for an adult, perhaps. I don’t think I could face the amount of stitches needed for a bigger size in lace weight.

Ciel (Citron) from the back

Ciel on Z.

Ciel & missing teeth

Next? What happens when I get my knitting mojo back.
